Age 10
Shot 51 for nine holes the first time he played at Scioto Country Club.
Broke 100 by the end of the summer.
Won the Scioto Juvenile Championship.
Age 11
Shot a low round of 81.
Age 12
Youngest member of winning Scioto team in Columbus Junior Golf League.
Age 13
Broke 70 for the first time at Scioto.
Made first national tournament appearance at USGA Junior Amateur in Oklahoma.
Won Ohio State Junior Class B Division (golfers 15 and under) for first of three consecutive years.
Age 14
Made first hole-in-one (17th hole at Scioto).
Won Ohio State Junior Championship.
Age 15
Shot 66 to set the amateur course record at Scioto.
Made first U.S. Amateur start, meeting Bobby Jones for the first time.
Became captain of the Upper Arlington High School golf team as a sophomore.
Age 16
Played exhibition match with Sam Snead at Scioto (Nicklaus shot 72 to Snead’s 68).
Won the Ohio State Open Championship by eight shots, shooting a third-round 64 at Marietta Country Club.
Said his father: “I really felt he could accomplish anything in golf he wanted after that victory.”
Age 17
Qualified for his first U.S. Open, missing the cut.
Age 18
Finished 12th at the PGA TOUR’s Rubber City Open at Firestone Country Club.
Made cut in U.S. Open, tying for 41st.
